Abstract:

Perimeters of fires that occurred in Montana that were compiled by the Northern Region Fire GIS staff from various sources. Fire perimeters were determined from digital capture procedures.

The original data from the Forest Service has been clipped to the boundaries of Montana by the State Library and converted to Montana State Plane Coordinates, NAD83, meters. The Forest Service data is available at http://www.fs.fed.us/r1/ecology/fire2000/.

Most of the narrative in this metadata is from the metadata provided by the Forest Service.

The data set includes perimeters of fires from the year 2000 that occurred in Montana on land administered by the USDA - Forest Service, USDI - Bureau of Land Management, USDI - National Park Service, USDI- Fish and Wildlife Service, Montana - DNRC, USDI - Bureau of Indian Affairs, the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes, Idaho Department of Lands, and various private and county lands. This data set represents the compiled fire perimeters in the area encompassed by and adjacent to the Northern Region of the Forest Service. Fires mapped as part of Complexes are mapped as individual fires in this data set.

Occasionally, National Forests submitted fire perimeters as a Forestwide data set and these were not parsed to individual fires and posted to the Web site individually. Data represent the most current, compiled fire perimeters at time of publication. In addition, since many fires are still active, these data may not represent final perimeters.

Purpose:

The data set is being developed for a variety of Federal and State assessments pertaining to the spatial extent of the fires within or immediately adjacent to the Northern Region of the USDA - Forest Service.

Supplemental information:

These digital fire perimeters were developed from one or more of the following digital capture procedures; heads - up digitizing from hand- drawn perimeters, ground and/or aerial Global Positioning System coordinates, Infrared photography, a combination of the above procedures, or unknown derivation. Preliminary line and node error checking has been performed to remove dangles and overshoots. Polygons have been checked for closure and are attributed with Fire name, Arc/Info acres, and method of digital capture.

This does not seem to be an accurate calculation. It may have been derived from the polygon coordinates in an inappropriate coordinate system, or may be from a different version of the polygon.
