Abstract:
The data set consists of a series of natural color 0.03 meters (approximately 1 foot) digital orthoimages covering part of the Yellowstone River from Sweet Grass County, Montana to the Missouri River confluence in McKenzie County, North Dakota. This imagery will be used as the base for multiple purposes and analyses by the partnership of the YRCDC and the Army Corp of Engineers, Omaha District. The high resolution, 0.3 meter (approximately 1 foot) data will also be used as base map for monitoring long-term change.

These images cover the course of the Yellowstone River through Sweet Grass, Treasure, Rosebud, Custer, Prairie, and Richland Counties, Montana, and McKenzie and Williams Counties in North Dakota. They were created by Woolpert to tie in with images collected in 2004 that cover the river in Stillwater, Yellowstone, and Dawson Counties, Montana.
Purpose:
These data were created as part of a joint Yellowstone River Conservation District Council and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Omaha District cumulative impacts study of the Yellowstone River channel and floodplain. The multi-agency interdisciplinary planning study extends 477 river miles from Sweet Grass County, Montana to the Missouri River confluence in McKenzie County, North Dakota.

The datasets were created to operate within the ArcGIS software environment. In addition, they are intended to serve as a base for the project GIS and also to support a wide variety of analyses including planimetric data extraction (e.g., infrastructure, riverine geomorphology, land cover, habitat and vegetation), and to monitor long-term river channel changes.

Data Quality Information:
Attribute accuracy report:
Image color values may deviate from the original imagery due to image value interpolation during the rectification and color balancing process. Color values are verified by visual inspection of the orthoimage.

Logical consistency report:
All digital orthoimagery is visually inspected for completeness to ensure that no gaps, hard seam lines, or shifting has occurred. All the imagery is clipped into final delivery format and visually checked for color differences. All imagery is cloud free and was flown in a leaf-off/no-snow timeframe.
Horizontal Positional Accuracy Report:
Horizontal accuracy meets or exceeds a 4.5 foot horizontal accuracy at 95 percent confidence level using RMSE(r) x 1.7308 as defined by the FGDC Geospatial Positioning Accuracy Standards
Quantitative horizontal positional accuracy assessment:
Horizontal positional accuracy value: NSSDA
Horizontal positional accuracy explanation:
The National Standard for Spatial Data Accuracy (NSSDA) implements a statistical and testing methodology for estimating the positional accuracy of points on maps and in digital geospatial data, with respect to georeferenced ground positions of higher accuracy.

Quantitative vertical positional accuracy assessment:

Source information:
Originator: Eisenbraun and Associates
Publication date: 03/14/2008
Title: Digital Orthophotography
Publication place: Yankton, SD
Publisher: Eisenbraun and Associates
Type of source media: digital files
Source contribution:
Horizontal and vertical controls were used to establish positions and elevations for reference and correlation purposes and as input to the aerotriangulation process. Control consists of both Airbourne GPS to provide camera station positions and photoidentifiable surveyed ground control for ground reference.
Calendar date: 200803141

Process step:
The digital orthophotography was obtained with a ADS40 digital sensor. The ortho imagery was rectified to a LiDAR surface using aerotriangulation and Cubic Convolution methodology. The orthoimagery was mosiced and radiometrically balanced to ensure tonal consistency. The final pixel resolution is 0.03 meters and meets all NSSDA accuracy requirements as stated in the positional accuracy section of the metadata report.
