Abstract:
Aerial photo mosaics of the Yellowstone River corridor. Images may be a mix of years from 1948 to 1951, in MrSID format. These images range in size from 2 to 43 megabytes.

These images were georeferenced to 1995 U.S. Geological Survey Digital Orthophoto Quadrangles. Positional accuracy was targeted on the river corridor. Little effort was made to reference the upland areas in regions of high relief.

In general, there is one image for each county, from Sweet Grass, Montana, to McKenzie, North Dakota. Yellowstone County is divided into 2 images.

Some older GIS applications may need .sdw files to accompany these files for georeferencing information. ESRI's ArcMap needs .aux files to read the coordinate system of the images from. These files may be accessed at ftp://ftp.geoinfo.msl.mt.gov/Data/Spatial/NonMSDI/Collections/Yellowstone_River_Clearinghouse/Imagery/1950/aux_and_sdw.zip.

The cell size of the images varies from 1 to 2.5 meters:
McKenzie - 1.879
Richland - 1.823
Dawson - 2.394
Prairie - 1.882
Custer - 2.462
Rosebud - 1.853
Treasure - 1.790
Yellowstone - 1.000
Stillwater - 1.000
Sweet Grass - 1.000
Purpose:
Developed as part of the Yellowstone River Cummulative Effects Study. Imagery is intended for reach level analysis of changes in the Yellowstone River Corridor.

Data Quality Information:
Horizontal Positional Accuracy Report:
Individual images were georeferenced to 1995 DOQs at a scale of approximately 1:6,000. Number of registration points varied depending on the ammount of distortion in the original photograph. Positional accuracy targeted the river corridor. Little effort was made to reference the upland areas in regions of high relief.

Source contribution:
This is the source of the images for Sweet Grass, Stillwater, and western Yellowstone counties.

The EROS Data Center has archived thousands of rolls of film containing several million frames of historical aerial and satellite photographs dating back to the 1930's gathered from various Federal agencies. This archive includes the rather well known, often utilized NHAP and NAPP film, but the largest portion of this archive consists of original film acquired in support of the USGS 1:24,000 topographic quadrangle map series, taken during the 1940s through the 1970s. Most of this photography is reasonably large scale to support the production of the quadrangle maps. USGS EROS has implemented a medium-resolution digital product. The medium-resolution files are created at approximately 600 dpi with an output image size of around five inches square.

Process step:
Original scans were recieved by DTM Consulting from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers on two different external hard drives.
Process step:
ENVI was used to georeference individual images to match 1995 DOQs. Control points focused on the river corridor. When the georeferencing closely matched unchaged areas in the DOQs, the image was rectified and saved as a new TIF image with referencing information. Edge matching between overlapping images was performed so that the 'top' image represented the best georeferencing.
Process step:
All images each county were mosiaced into a single TIF image, or into 2 images for Yellowstone County, using ENVI.
